The Tamil Nadu government on Monday launched its exclusive education TV channel, aimed at benefiting students of classes I to XII.
An initiative of the School Education Department, ‘Kalvi Tholaikkatchi’ (Education TV) was launched by Chief Minister K Palaniswami.
The channel’s content will include shows aimed at school children, besides those on jobs and related issues.
“Students can now learn from home,” School Education Minister KA Sengkottaiyan said at the launch event.
This channel will be available on TN Arasu Cable TV network (channel no 200).
Educational TV channel in Punjab
In 2016, Punjab Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema made the revelation of launching a dedicated TV channel, Vidya TV, showing educational content. It provides quality content to those preparing for competitive examinations as well as middle school.
The channel also provides students with career counselling and programmes on current affairs. Punjab already has an EDUSAT programme, which runs around nine educational programmes with multimedia, and animation during school hours, in its 3400 schools.
Swayam Prabha scheme
On July 9, 2017, the Union HRD ministry launched a scheme called Swayam Prabha, allowing 32 direct-to-home (DTH) television channels to broadcast programs for school and university students on 24X7 basis using the GSAT-15 satellite.
These channels help students in rural and remote areas where IT infrastructure has not penetrated so well.
Every day, there is new content for at least four hours which is repeated five more times in a day, allowing the students to choose the time of their convenience.
The channels are uplinked from BISAG, Gandhinagar. The contents are provided by NPTEL, IITs, UGC, CEC, IGNOU, NCERT and NIOS.
The DTH channels cover the following:
1) Higher education:
Curriculum-based course contents at post-graduate and under-graduate level covering diverse disciplines such as arts, science, commerce, performing arts, social sciences and humanities, engineering, technology, law, medicine, agriculture, etc.
All courses would be certification-ready in their detailed offering through SWAYAM.
2) School education (9-12 levels):
Modules for teacher’s training as well as teaching and learning aids for children of India to help them understand the subjects better and also help them in preparing for competitive examinations for admissions to professional degree programmes.
3) Curriculum-based courses that can meet the needs of life-long learners of Indian citizens in India and abroad.
4) Assist students (class 11th & 12th) prepare for competitive exams.
