At a special event held at the Sofitel Hotel in Melbourne, Caris Tiivel from Western Australia has been crowned Miss Universe Australia 2016. The 23-year-old model, who will now represent Miss Universe 2016, said after winning the title that she wants to raise awareness for depression and anxiety. “I would really like to support a cause like that, and provide some assistance to people who are going through a tough time.” She also told the Herald Sun, “I’m someone that has suffered from anxiety and depression in the past and a lot of people think if you are always smiling, you are always happy all the time, there is nothing wrong with you.”
Elise Chambellant from Queensland was first runner-up while Marijana Radmanovic from Victoria was second runner-up. The rest of the final five were Rose McEvoy from New South Wales and Jasmine Stringer from Queensland. Tiivel inherited the crown from last year’s winner Monika Radulovic, who was a Top 5 finalist in Miss Universe 2015.
